Preparation for Periodontal/Implant Surgery

WEEK PRIOR TO SURGERY

  • Inform the office of any changes in your health or the medications you are taking.
  • Do not take any Aspirin for 7 days prior to your surgery.
  • Inform your employer that you are about to have oral surgery and that time off from work might be necessary after the surgery.
  • Fill any prescriptions Dr. Ghiabi may have prescribed for you.
  • You may want to prepare special (soft) food for after your surgery.

NIGHT PRIOR TO SURGERY

  • Do not take any Aspirin or Aspirin-containing medications.
  • Take any medications prescribed by Dr. Ghiabi as instructed.
  • Minimize drinking alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat a nutritious food.
  • Have a good night’s rest.

MORNING OF SURGERY

  • IF ORAL SEDATION IS PLANNED, DO NOT EAT OR DRINK 2 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT.
  • Otherwise, eat a light breakfast, but avoid taking excessive liquid (tea or coffee) and fatty food (butter or eggs).
  • If surgery is planned in the afternoon, eat a light lunch.
  • Take any medications prescribed by Dr. Ghiabi as instructed.
  • Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing.
  • Do not wear facial make-up or nail polish.
  • For men: If you have a beard, please shave it before your surgery.
  • If possible, arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.

Instructions for Concious Sedation

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • We will provide you with the sedation medication when you arrive at the office.
  • Do not eat or drink 2 hours before your appointment.
  • Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing.
  • Do not wear facial make-up or nail polish.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours.
  • Do not take sleeping pills for 24 hours.

AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery for 24 hours.
  • You will require a responsible person to take you home and remain with you for the remainder of the day.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 12 hours.
  • Do not take sleeping pills for 12 hours.
  • Do not climb stairs without assistance until completely recovered.
  • No heavy lifting until completely recovered.
  • Drink lots of water.

Care of your Mouth Following Periodontal/Implant Surgery

  • Take any medications prescribed for you by Dr. Ghiabi as directed.
  • Place an ice pack on your face for 3-4 hours (10 minutes on, 5 minutes off).
  • If you have a surgical stent, wear it continuously for 24 hours after surgery. After 24 hours, you may wear the stent only when not eating.
  • Stay on a soft diet for 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Do not drink through a straw.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Do not drink hot liquids for 24 hours after surgery.
  • Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours after surgery. After that, you can rinse with warm salt/water (2 tea spoon salt in a cup of water) 2-3 times a day.
  • Do not smoke for 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Do not brush your teeth in area of surgery until stitches are removed. You may brush the remaining areas.
  • Do not eat crunchy food (like popcorn and nuts) for 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Do not exercise strenuously for 1 week after surgery.
  • Do not swim for 6 weeks after surgery.
  • Some swelling may occur on the first day of surgery and is normal. Swelling beginning 3 or more days after surgery is not normal.
  • Minor bleeding may occur on the first day of surgery and is normal.
  • Some pain following surgery is normal. However, excessive pain and discomfort beginning 3 or more days after surgery is not normal.

Care of your Mouth Following an Extraction

  • Bite on a sterile gauze pad for 2-3 hours. You may change the gauze every 15 minutes.
  • Place an ice pack on your face for 3-4 hours (10 minutes on, 5 minutes off).
  • Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours after the extraction.
  • After 24 hours, you may rinse your mouth with warm salt-water (1 teaspoon salt in a cup of water) 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks.
  • Do not brush the extraction site for 7 days (you may brush your remaining teeth).
  • If you are a smoker, minimize smoking for 2 weeks.
  • Do not drink hot liquids for 24 hours.
  • Do not drink through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Stay on a soft diet for 2 weeks.
  • Do not exercise strenuously for 7 days.

MEDICATIONS

  • Take any medications prescribed to you by Dr. Ghiabi.

SWELLING

  • Some swelling may occur within 1-3 days after extraction and is normal.
  • Swelling beginning 4 or more days after extraction is not normal

BLEEDING

  • Minor bleeding may occur on the first day of extraction and is normal.
  • Excessive bleeding is not normal.

PAIN AND DISCOMFORT

  • Some pain following extraction is normal.
  • Excessive pain and discomfort 3 or more days after extraction is not normal.
